As Valentine’s Day approaches, it’s easy to get caught up in the traditional symbols of romance—flowers, chocolates, and cards. As a life coach committed to fostering deeper connections and understanding, I invite you to explore a more expansive definition of love that transcends romantic gestures and delves into the heart of what it truly means to love and be loved.
Broadening Our View of Love
I’ve been reading “All About Love: New Visions“, by bell hooks. In her book she challenges the reader to redefine love as a combination of care, commitment, knowledge, responsibility, respect, and trust. She argues that love is not merely a feeling but an action we choose to undertake daily – and I love that! I remember when I was young my mum used to say, “love is a verb!”
Love as a Social Force
In a time when division over politics, religion, and culture seems to be at an all-time high, hooks’ insights are particularly poignant. She emphasizes that our society often lacks the true understanding and application of love, leading to widespread disconnection and disenfranchisement. By embracing the lessons from “All About Love: New Visions”, we can learn to extend our love beyond intimate relationships and see it as a vital social force capable of bridging divides and healing wounds.
Practical Ways to Cultivate Love
This Valentine’s Day, consider how you can cultivate love in its broadest sense. I’ve listed some of my suggestions here, based on things clients have said to me :
Express Empathy: Take the time to really listen to others, seeking to understand their experiences and perspectives without judgment.
Show Appreciation: Let those around you know that you value them not just for what they do but for who they are.
Engage in Acts of Kindness: A simple act of kindness can brighten someone’s day and make them feel seen and valued.
Educate Yourself and Others: Share knowledge compassionately and encourage open, respectful dialogues about difficult topics.
This Valentine’s Day, let’s pledge to practice love in all its forms—embracing it not just as a personal feeling but as a collective necessity. In doing so, we can begin to heal divisions and build a world where love is a common language spoken by all.
