I went to the Sydney Craft Fair with my daughter last Friday and we had such a fun day.
We booked into a jewelry-making class, it was so simple and best of all – extremely therapeutic! I share this with you as a reminder to take time out and do something creative on your own or with a friend. I’d forgotten how much I enjoy making things. I used to spend a lot of time quilting and knitting but haven’t done anything like that for years.
It’s a well-known fact, that doing craft projects can have a number of health benefits:
- Reduces stress and anxiety
- A form of mindfulness requiring focus and concentration
- Promotes a sense of accomplishment
- Gives a break from daily routine
- Improves self esteem
- It’s fun
- A chance to learn something new
- Provides a purpose
- Can bring people together and improve connections
- An opportunity to share skills and knowledge with others
- Improves fine motor movements
- Decrease in cognitive decline
I enjoyed writing my first book – you can download a free copy.
Do you like being creative? There are plenty of fun classes run by www.classbento.com.au
Would love to hear what you enjoy. Here are some of my ideas:
- Write short stories, poetry or music. A diary full of dreams is therapeutic.
- Painting or drawing – even if it’s dot to dot or painting by numbers!
- Dancing – create your own or follow a video or a bit of Zumba
- Woodwork – at the craft fair I saw people carving beautiful bowls
- Glass blowing – never done it but it looks fun
- Mozaic – I once designed a tray and still use it today
- Pottery – My daughter is great at this, she makes gifts for people
My friend Sue Douglas teaches Zentangle® (patterns formed using elemental strokes ICSO)
It’s fun and easy to learn. Comment to this blog if you’d like more information.
